Pa. railroad calendar delivered 63 years late

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) ? A northeastern Pennsylvania newspaper has just received a calendar to help ring in the new year ? except the year is 1950.

Scranton's The Times-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/S23ykD ) a mail carrier delivered it 63 years late without explanation on Friday.

The large tube contained a 1950 Pennsylvania Railroad calendar addressed to James Flanagan, former general manager of The Scranton Times.

The calendar includes a holiday greeting from a railroad executive dated December 1949. Flanagan died that month.

A U.S. Postal Service spokesman says lost mail is sometimes found when a machine is dismantled or office space is renovated.

Times-Tribune publisher Bobby Lynett says he'll see if the Steamtown National Historic Site railroad museum is interested in the calendar. If not, he'll display it in the newspaper's offices.

(AP) ? On Monday, the stock market was as choppy as the "fiscal cliff" deal-making that has been yanking it around.

U.S. stocks struggled for direction on the last day of the year, with the "fiscal cliff" just hours away and Republicans and Democrats yet to hammer out a budget deal.

The Dow Jones industrial average opened lower, with investors disappointed that politicians hadn't reached an agreement over a weekend of terse, stop-and-go negotiating. With no clarity on whether a deal would get done, and what it would look like if it did, the Dow spent the morning flitting between small gains and losses.

The Dow and the other major stock indexes turned higher at midday after a few signs that a deal was emerging. The Associated Press and other media outlets reported that both sides had agreed on a few key points on taxes and unemployment benefits. President Barack Obama was scheduled to speak on the issue at 1:30 p.m. EST.

Around 1 p.m. EST, the Dow was up 42 points to 12,979. The Standard & Poor's 500 was up eight to 1,411. The Nasdaq composite index was up 29 to 2,989.

If politicians can't agree on a deal by midnight, then higher taxes and lower government spending will automatically kick in Tuesday ? the so-called fiscal cliff. That would hurt the economy, many investors believe. But what might hurt more, they add, is the psychological impact of knowing that the government that can't agree on a budget.

"We're having a fragile recovery, with the pain of 2008 still fresh on everybody's mind," said Joe Heider, principal at Rehmann Group outside Cleveland. "It's fear of the unknown. And fear is one of the greatest drivers of the financial markets."

It's difficult to discern how a deal, or lack of a deal, might affect the stock market. From mid-November through roughly mid-December, the stock market rose more or less steadily, despite the "fiscal cliff" looming on the horizon. It wasn't until shortly before Christmas that the "cliff" finally scared investors enough to send the market down.

Some investors are unruffled by the approaching "cliff." Even if Republicans and Democrats can't reach a deal, some investors think the effect of the higher taxes and lower government spending would be more like the anti-climactic Y2K scare than a true Armageddon. The impact would be felt only gradually ? for example, workers might get more taxes withheld from their first couple of paychecks in the new year ? but then Congress could always retroactively repeal those higher taxes, these investors reason.

Others are more concerned. The higher taxes and lower government spending could take more than $600 billion out of the U.S. economy and send it back into recession. Politically, the U.S. would send a message that its lawmakers can't cooperate. And without a deal, investors would have no good read on the country's long-term policy for taxes and spending, or how the government plans to eventually trim its deficit.

Tim Speiss, partner in charge of the personal wealth advisers practice at EisnerAmper in New York, followed the "cliff" negotiations on Monday and wondered if the U.S. would get its debt rating cut again. The Standard & Poor's ratings agency cut its rating of the U.S. amid similar negotiations, when lawmakers were arguing over the government's borrowing limit in August 2011. S&P said at the time that "America's governance and policymaking (is) becoming less stable, less effective, and less predictable." Its rating cut sent the stock market into a tailspin.

The other major ratings agencies, Moody's and Fitch, have suggested that they might lower their ratings of the U.S. if the country goes over the "fiscal cliff."

"That is, unfortunately, the big story," Speiss said.

It's also one of the only stories. There's been little other news to trade on during the holiday season, giving the "fiscal cliff" drama outsized influence. No major companies are scheduled to report earnings this week, and the major economic indicator this week, the government's monthly jobs report, won't be released until Friday.

Trading volume has also been light, with many investors still on vacation. That also makes the market more susceptible to getting yanked around: With fewer shares trading hands, the market can be moved by relatively small trades.

Last week, about 2.2 billion shares traded hands each day on average. Throughout the year, the average has been closer to 3.6 billion.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.74 percent from 1.70 percent late Friday.

Some of the best-performing stocks for the year were those that had been hammered in 2011. Homebuilder PulteGroup, appliance maker Whirlpool and Bank of America all more than doubled over the year, after falling by double-digit percentages in 2011.

Some of the worst performers of the year were Best Buy, Hewlett-Packard and J.C. Penney. All are struggling to keep up with competitors who have adapted more quickly to changing technologies and changing customer tastes. They were all up Monday, but were each down at least 45 percent for the year.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Adrian Peterson picked up the Minnesota Vikings and gave them a thrilling ride to the playoffs, where the next stop on this improbable journey is, yes, Green Bay.

This game was so full of action, intrigue and tension they're going to stage it again next weekend.

Peterson finished 9 yards shy of breaking Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record, but he still powered the Vikings past the Packers 37-34 Sunday with 199 yards to set up a rematch at Lambeau Field in a first-round playoff game.

"I told myself to come into this game focused on one thing, and that's winning," Peterson said.

Peterson rumbled around the left side of the line for a 27-yard gain in the closing seconds, his career-high 34th carry exactly one year after reconstructive surgery on his left knee. That set up Blair Walsh's 29-yard field goal as time expired and put the Vikings (10-6) in the postseason after consecutive last-place finishes.

"For our guys to be as resilient as they were, it has you swelling with pride," coach Leslie Frazier said.

The division champion Packers (11-5) dropped to the NFC's No. 3 seed. Their five-game winning streak against the Vikings ended.

"I had a feeling that we had the game in the bag the whole game," Vikings cornerback Chris Cook said. "It was just a vibe that I had on the sideline, in how we were carrying ourselves."

Aaron Rodgers completed 28 of 40 passes for 365 yards and four touchdowns and no interceptions, connecting with Jordy Nelson from 2 yards to tie the game with 2:54 remaining. But Christian Ponder threw for three scores, including one to Peterson.

Ponder went 16 for 28 for 234 yards, including a 65-yard zinger in stride to Jarius Wright midway through the fourth quarter that set up Ponder's third touchdown toss.

"It's disappointing. A lot of us wanted that extra week," Rodgers said.

Peterson finished with 2,097 yards, becoming the seventh player in NFL history to reach the 2,000 mark. He had to work for it, pulling out all the cutbacks, stutter-steps and spins he could find in his exceptional skill set. His longest run was only 28 yards against a defense geared to slow him down, and the first contact often came at, near or behind the line of scrimmage.

"It wasn't meant to happen, or it would've happened. Not to say it doesn't hurt, because it does," Peterson said of Dickerson's 28-year-old record. "But we came in here tonight and accomplished the ultimate goal, and that was getting a win and punching our ticket to the playoffs."

The Packers cut the lead to 27-24 late in the third quarter on a touchdown reception by James Jones. The on-field ruling was a fumble at the goal line, triggering an automatic review. Because the Packers threw the challenge flag after the replay process began, however, they were only penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, not prevented from benefiting from the overturned call. That's what happened to Detroit infamously on Thanksgiving, when a disputed score by Houston was prevented from review.

After posting a 9-23 record over the last two years, the Vikings made so many strides in 2012 that the season was already a success. But no NFL team would ever be satisfied by finishing in defeat against a division rival, and the emotion and energy behind the quest was palpable all afternoon.

"It took us a little while to adjust to the crowd noise, and we didn't get going," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "That usually happens up here. This is a tough place to play, no doubt. We anticipated this being the loudest environment of the year. They pumped it in here pretty good today."

The NFC North was sewn up by the Packers two weeks earlier. Even though the bye remained in the balance the top seed didn't do the Packers any good last season. They went 15-1 and lost their opener at home to the eventual champion Giants.

Rodgers played without injured leading receiver Randall Cobb, so Greg Jennings was the main guy, grabbing eight passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns. But the Vikings sacked Rodgers five times, recovering a fumble on one of them at midfield to set up a third-quarter touchdown.

Rodgers has 24 touchdowns, only four interceptions and a 70 percent completion rate over 10 career starts against the Vikings. His poise, arm strength and savvy came through clear against them as much as any other team. Plus, cornerback Antoine Winfield's aggravated hand injury kept him on the sideline for most of the game.

Just as Ponder capably complemented Peterson, DuJuan Harris came out of nowhere to provide Rodgers some help. Green Bay has been proving lately it's not a one-sided offense, either, and Harris rushed 14 times for 70 yards

But this was Peterson's show. Second-and-27? He surged off right tackle and bounced outside for 28 yards on a drive that ended with his second touchdown, a 2-yard reception that pushed the lead to 27-17 in the third quarter. The "MVP" chants from the crowd rang out in earnest after that.

NOTES: Cobb's absence meant the Packers went without a 1,000-yard receiver for the first time since 2003. Cobb finished with 954 yards. ... Vikings WR Jerome Simpson was woozy after an end-zone collision in the third quarter, falling back down after trying to get up the first time. He passed concussion tests and returned to the game.

With Portrait Photography To Make Moments Last Forever ? Arts and ...

Speaking of portrait photography, it refers to the photographing of a person capturing his or her features, expressions, moods and to a certain extent the surroundings. The focus of a portrait is essentially on the face of the subject. Family portrait photography is what is generally referred to as a ?family photograph? where various family members are captured in different poses and settings.

The availability of affordable point and shoot digital cameras has ensured that every family is now able to capture their ?special? moments for posterity on their own but a trawl through the social networking sites or through some online albums will tell you how wrong amateur photographs can get even with the best of technology. You can read on to know more.

Professionals who specialize in the area of portrait photography are an assurance that the photographs for which they have been assigned will be exactly what you want. After all, portrait photographs are commissioned to mark special milestones in people?s lives such as baptism, the first birthday, beginning of school and of course graduation followed by other big days such as engagement, promotions and then retirement. These are all special moments to be cherished, treasured, shared and relived for a long time and the only way of doing this is through photographs.

Of course, you do have video filming, but let?s be honest, how many of us go back to the video recordings of the landmark moments of our lives? We prefer looking at the photographs, don?t we? Portraits of the older members of the family acquire a special significance and sentimental value when they are no longer with us and serve as reminders of the love and guidance that they provided in their lifetimes, hence it is important to have an experienced photographer take care of these important photos. Find a professional portrait photographer to meet your needs.

To continue in the same vein, whenever we have a family photograph taken by someone in the family, we usually notice a lot of flaws not to mention the missing family member who was behind the camera at the moment. Family gatherings are very special and emotional occasions which allow for a lot of beautiful moments to be captured on film. Once again, only a professional with experience in Family Portrait Photography can do justice to them. ?Posed? and ?Natural? moments are blended together by a professional photographer through adept handling of the camera and lighting to create an evocative set of family photos to shared and framed and put up at home to be admired by relatives and friends. And as an added bonus, every member of the family gets to be in the picture!

Continuing Education for Nurses - SkyBlue Cross Global ...

Continuing Education for Nurses

http://www.skybluecross.org/
The following article relates not only to nurses but also to those aspiring to enter the noble profession of nursing. We hope you will get some insight into this field.
Although we have used the female reference for nurses throughout this article ("she", "her"), this is done purely for convenience and in no way reflects the gender status of nurses in today's society.

Most people assume that once a nurse has completed her education and has become registered, that is the "end" and that no more learning or education is required. This couldn't be further from the truth. There's more to nursing then just tending and looking after patients.

It is highly critical that a nurse maintain and continue her ongoing education and is kept current on her profession. This is an integral part of maintaining her registration.

A nurse?s life in the 21st century is extremely fast paced. There are medical advances in precedures almost on a daily basis and it is essential that a nurse is kept abreast and is at the forefront of these improvements. This requires a high level of time management and dedication to improve oneself in addition to spending long hours in clinics and hospitals. Of course this is much easier said than done.

It is in the best interests of a good hospital to provide everything needed for nurses to continue their education. A good hospital will also more than likely pay for the education of their nurses. A lack of funds should not be a deterrent to a nurse continuing her education.

Many nurses regularly subscribe to nursing periodicals and magazines to keep up to date with their ongoing education.. Nurses are encouraged to go through the relavent published journals on a regular basis.

Of course let's not forget that just as important to success is the keeping of portfolios and timely documentation detailing all the training and education received throughout the nursing carreer. This written journal also serves as a method of organizing in an orderly manner, all the continuing education undertaken.

Admittedly, there exists a challenge with regards to access to this education for nurses, namely the expense, since nursing is still not considered to be among the better paid professions. This challenge to accessibility can perhaps be met by employers coming forward and funding the continuing education of registered nurses.

Please be sure to check out the many additional resources available on this topic online.

iMore Editors' Choice: Clay Jam, Discovr People, Hill Climb Racing, and more

iMore Editors' Choice: Clay Jam, Discovr People, Hill Climb Racing, and more!

Every week, the editors and writers at iMore carefully select some of our favorite, most useful, most extraordinary apps, accessories, gadgets, and websites. This week's selections include several iPhone and iPad games, a social app that helps you find interesting people to follow, and an app (for non US folk) that gives away free content and apps.

Discovr People - Ally Kazmucha

Discovr People is a great concept with a beautiful app behind it. If you ever have issues finding quality users to follow on Twitter, Discovr People is a great way to get there. Once launching the app you can type in any username you'd like to see their network and recent interactions. If you know people that engage with people that share the same interests with you, those are the usernames I would search for.

I used Discovr People recently to search for the followers on Twitter that I interact with the most. From there I looked at the people they'd have the most recent interactions with. I actually ended up finding quite a few interesting people that won't clutter up my timeline with pointless retweets and memes. You can view their profiles right within Discovr People as well as follow them and add them to lists. For free, what more could you ask for?

Twelve Days of Christmas - Chris Oldroyd

This week, being Christmas week, I have chosen Apple?s annual free app ?Twelve Days of Christmas? that gives away free content for twelve days after Christmas.

The app gives away apps, books and music content every day starting from December 26th and it is well worth grabbing. You will receive a push notification each day of the promotion to remind you to get your free content.

So far Apple has given away a music EP, a football game and a TV episode from the really popular series ?Sherlock?. The downside is that the app is available in loads of places with the exception of the US App Store. If you haven?t got it already, make sure you do as there are still 9 more days to go!

Game of Thrones companion - Joseph Keller

If you're a fan of A Song of Ice and Fire series of books, or their adaptation, the Game of Thrones television series on HBO, you know that the world created by George R.R. Martin is very dense. The Game of Thrones Companion is your go-to reference guide for that world. The Companion contains the full details of characters, houses, cities, and more. Also included are several maps of all of the major locations in the series. But one of the best features of this app are the spoiler settings, which allow you to set which book you have read, up through the latest one. This way, you don't accidentally spoil yourself before you?ve had a chance to read the later books, and after you?ve finished each successive volume, you can update your spoiler settings accordingly. The Game of Thrones Companion is available for $2.99. If you?re a Game of Thrones fan, you should definitely give it a look.

Clay Jam - Simon Sage

Clay Jam is an imaginative free-to-play game that has players amassing clay by rolling a ball over various colorful and wacky monsters. Players have to dig a trench for a ball to roll through by tracing a path ahead of it, and as it rolls over monsters, the ball gets bigger, enabling it to pick up bigger ones. In that way, it's a lot like Katamari Damacy, but be careful to avoid things that are too big, or else you'll just bump right off them and lose some clay. There are optional missions for each stage that reward extra clay, which can be used to unlock new levels and monsters. Clay Jam is a ton of fun, and though it's very kid-friendly, even us grown-ups will enjoy playing a few rounds. You'll be surprised by how good an app made of clay looks.

Hill Climb Racing - Leanna Lofte

Hill Climb Racing isn't so much my pick, as it is my husband's pick for the week -- which is precisely why I'm choosing it. You see, my husband is what one would call a "gamer", but on the PC, on the iPhone or iPad, yet he is totally addicted to Hill Climb Racing right now. It's a physics based driving game where the goal is to drive as far as possible; it can be classified is a "runner" (only you're driving, not running). You must use the gas and break to control the speed of your car to prevent from flipping your car and breaking the driver's neck. Hill Climb Racing is both challenging and addicting.

Avengers: The Initiative - Rene Ritchie

AHulk smash puny pick of the week!

I'm fully capable of not liking things that are brilliant. There are plenty of great movies, filled with incredible vision and talent, that just aren't to my tastes. By the same token, I adore quite a few things that, empirically, aren't very good, including terrible martial arts movies, and bad comic book adaptions. It's into that last category that Avengers: The Initiative falls. As a game unto itself, it's a poor -- really poor -- clone of Infinity Blade with nowhere near the tightness of control, and even more repetitiveness.

But right out the gate, you could play as the Hulk.

Read that again. Infinity Blade, but you could play as the %$#@ Hulk. Yeah. Smash.

And now a bad thing has gotten even better. Avengers: The Initiative has been updated to better support the iPad mini, as well as the Phone 5 and iPod touch 5's 16:9 widescreen. They've also added the Hulk's Mr. Fixit look from the classic Peter David era, added a new location, the Hydracarrier (think Hellicarrier but more neo-Nazi), new enemies including the Skrull (a race of alien shape-changers replaced by the Chitauri in the Ultimates and the Avengers movie) and the villain, the Task Master.

And they've added a new playable character, Captain America.

That's right. %$#@ Captain America.

Would that the their game-crafted skill matched their feature intentions!

But just like I enjoy the hell out of really cheesy movies and TV shows, I'm enjoying the hell out of Avengers: The Initiative.

Normally $6.99, but right now it's on sale for the cheap, cheap price of FREE.

Your choice?

Now that we've chosen our favorites for the week, we want to hear yours! Did you pick up a killer app, accessory, or game this week? Let us know in the comments below!

Green Blog: An Industry's Future, Blowing in the Wind

As I note in Friday?s paper, construction of new wind farms is going to grind to a halt with the end, at least temporarily, of the wind production tax credit. What?s next?

The credit is worth 2.2 cents per killowatt-hour generated, beyond whatever the electricity can be sold for on the regional market. At some hours of the day, most or all of the revenue will come from the tax credit.

Without the credit, wind farms could still be profitable if they were built where the wind is strongest, according to Robert W. Thresher, a research fellow at the Energy Department?s National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo. But the trend lately, he said, has been to move to somewhat less favorable sites because the best ones within connection distance of the grid have been used up.

That has meant an evolution in wind machines, Dr. Thresher said. Newer ones built in places with weaker wind are as tall as 100 meters (328 feet) with the aim of catching more energy; they also have bigger rotors so that at lower wind speeds they can still develop the torque necessary to turn a generator. But longer blades and higher towers are more expensive. In Europe, he said, some developers have even moved to towers 120 meters (394 feet) high.

But the other way to lasso more energy, he said, would be to extend and strengthen the power grid. Some of the places with the best wind are in rural areas with little or no transmission capability, he noted, and a stronger and more reliable grid would allow wind energy producers to sell electricity where prices are highest. The strongest wind is in the Midwest, and the highest prices are commanded on the East and West coasts, Dr. Thresher noted.

For the time being, though, developers seem likely to wait for the outcome of a debate in Congress over whether to revive the production tax credit. Taxes in general, of course, are on the table as part of the ?fiscal cliff? budget negotiations, and no one is sure what will emerge from that process.

At the moment, many members are still at home, poised to return if a deal is struck. January seems more likely, though.

Best wine over Christmas - Elitistreview

Back in 2010 I had the greatest Chablis of my life: Chablis Premier Cru Fourchaume ?Vignoble de Vaulorent? 2007 from Fevre. I had a bottle on Christmas eve and it remains the greatest Chablis I?ve tried in my life. My comments in the previous note still pretty much apply, only this was more complex and subtle, without losing any of the vibrant energy or classy life. It is just the complete Chablis experience.

Chablis 'Vignoble de Vaulorent' 2007, Fevre I was rather surprised that a wine of this fulgurating quality was bottled with a composite cork. This may have implications for it?s long term storage, I suppose, which is a bit of a shame as this is clearly a Chablis with a glorious life ahead of it. But you don?t need to wait, it shows everything at five years old with style and ?lan, throbbing with quality and bursting with style. If, like my associate Mr P (who is open-minded enough to call me Davy), you are fortunate enough to own a case of this I?d really start drinking. He has promised to pop a bottle when I meet him in April ? if I was that kind of person I?d be wetting myself in anticipation.

So you must be thinking this insanely fine Chablis will set you back an arm and a leg from some merchant who requires your first-ranked teddy bear as deposit. Not so! You can get it for ?29 a bottle from The Wine Society. In these enlightened times greater bargains are rarely found. I may go and score myself another couple of bottles right now.

We drank this coruscating Chablis with a chicken from the supplier of the best chickens I?ve eaten on a regular basis ? Beechcroft Direct. Here?s the bird:
Roast chickenIf?I am brutally honest, I overcooked?the?chicken just a little; something I?very rarely do

No?such problems with The Editor?s goose fat roast potatoes!

Editor Dani's goose fat roast potatoes

He cooks the best roast potatoes I have eaten, when my meat/oven requirements allow for perfection, and no one else even comes close. Sorry Linda.

So it?s been a happy few days in Elitistreview Towers, we have drank well although not excessively, and eaten appallingly brilliantly. Nothing matched that ?29 Chablis, though!

Happy holidays!

Still, not everyone likes to cook for big groups.? If your idea of the best home based business is to cook small meals for just a couple of people, you may want to consider becoming a personal chef.? You do not need to be an actual chef to run this type of business.? What makes this a best home based business is that it is one of the fastest-growing industries in the U.S.

Whether you choose for your best home based business to be in catering or in being a personal chef, you still need to do some preparation.? You will want to develop your food preparation skills so that you are showing people you have a best home based business.? You can gain experience in the food industry through stints in restaurants, clubs, caterers, or even volunteer work.? You do not need to have years of experience to run a best home based business in cooking, but you can gain some valuable advice.

You will also need to determine what type of services you want to offer when designing your best home based business.? Know what type of cooking you want to do and if you want to be a personal chef on a regularly scheduled basis.? You will also need to determine a name and gain some financing for your best home based business.? Also, don?t forget important items like insurance and kitchen equipment, and making sure you are in compliance with municipal standards.? In order to have the best home based business for cooking, you will also need to make sure you are within the law

There may be a number of things to think about when designing the best home based business for you, but if you have a passion for cooking, being a personal chef or caterer may be the best home based business for you.? Take the time to make plans and get started on the career you?ve always dreamed of, and cook your way to having the best home based business.

Kapo Trading Expands Plus Size Women's Hawaiian Clothing

Plus size clothing has come a long way within the clothing industry and fashion market, especially for Hawaiian clothing. In the past, the choices regarding clothing made for plus size individuals was very limited, often lacking a respect to the ever-changing fashion trends within society. The availability of different styles was quite poor and unaccommodating. The demand for a better selection has increased with the unfortunate rise in overweight individuals across the world.

The interest in the plus size clothing market has increased due to the increasing levels of obesity and eating disorders that plague a large number of individuals. The shape and size of the average person has increased throughout the years, demanding a shift in the way clothes are designed, produced, and marketed ? especially from women, who as a whole have become larger and heavier than they appeared about 20 years ago. People who are now reaching their 40s and 50s are adding to the increase in obesity ? more than 60% of this group is in need of plus size clothing.

Supplying a Market Need ? Women and now becoming more comfortable in their own skin ? and their own clothing

Retailers and designers have noticed the intense need for plus size clothing and have made strides within the market. Kapo Trading Company, a retailer of Hawaiian clothing, has seen a significant increase in its plus size clothing orders over the last couple years, so has decided to expand its plus size Hawaiian Clothing line for women?s muumu dresses. Stacey Riska, President of Kapo Trading Company notes, ?Plus size clothing is not meant to cover a fuller figure, but to enhance it. Boxy shapes and dowdy fabrics are a thing of the past. Today, plus size clothing is vibrant, attractive and easy to wear.?

Kapo Trading Company delivers Hawaii to yo fashion coats u. Specializing in fun and authentic Hawaiian gifts, clothing, and decor. The Aloha spirit is something we live and enjoy every day.

Is Google Using AdWords Express Budgets To Promote Google+?

Google now offers small businesses using its AdWords Express service a way to promote their Google+ pages seemingly everywhere but on Google+ itself, which Google reasserts should be an ad-free zone. That?omission may make these ads less effective for those seeking new customers or followers to their Google+ pages. Meanwhile, the push gets those same small businesses spending their advertising dollars to promote Google+ itself for Google.

AdWords Express & Google+ Pages

In case you?re not?familiar?with AdWords Express, it?s Google?s version of automated paid search. With AdWords Express, small and local businesses who are in a time crunch and don?t have time to properly set up campaigns let Google run their ads. Google then chooses where to show the ads. Some will appear in Google search results, based on terms that Google selects. Some appear within Google Maps. Some appear on non-Google sites that are part of the Google advertising network.

Since some small businesses don?t have web sites, Google has offered them free ones to use with AdWords Express through its Get Your Business Online service. But now, Google has said businesses can drive visitors to their Google+ pages.

In a?post?late last week Christian Oestlien, a member of?Google Product Management, announced that AdWords Express would now ?offer? businesses a new way to promote their Google+ pages:

Along with the announcement Oestlien mentioned that this option would be available for all Google properties ? except, well, Google+. In fact, Oestlien took a pseudo-swing at Facebook by stating:

? we only show these promotions when they?re appropriate?not overwhelming people with random ads when they?re trying to spend time with friends.

Why No Advertising On Google+?

Many could argue that if you are trying ?attract more followers? they would want to do so on Google+ itself. Why show social network ads in search? Why show them for your Google+ page in maps? This is a hard stance that Google+ took throughout 2012. But the thing is, social ads work. There simply isn?t a better place for admins to try and grow fans with ads than from targeted ads in the social network.

Well, Can You Advertise To Just Google+ Users?

The answer is no. A Google representative?confirmed to us that the only targeting option is ?normal targeting,? so it will reach everyone. This is a huge negative for those AdWords Express advertisers who are trying to build a following for their Google+ page. Seeing that you can?t advertise on the social network and you can?t target those across the Google network with a Google+ enabled account, you have no guarantee that a click is coming from someone who has a Google+ account or if they have even heard of Google+ before.

So Just What Is This New Service That Google Is ?Offering??

The 10,000-foot view of this announcement reads like this:

  • You give your money to Google to handle online advertising
  • Google spends your money across their network
  • Instead of driving traffic to your site, the new?announcement??offers? businesses the ability to let Google drive traffic to a Google property
  • The goal is to ?attract new followers and customers? but Google can?t show ads within the social network itself.
  • Nor can active Google+ users be targeted

Why Is This A Bit Suspect?

While Google+ has been relatively successful, it has come at the hands of a huge investment. From advertising during big NFL games, to worldwide print and TV campaigns, to big NFL partnerships, Google has spent?inordinate marketing resources on the Google+ product. In a way, Google is now leveraging AdWords Express users? budgets to do so, too.

The glaring lack of ability to target ads on Google+ itself, or even to target users who are on Google+ makes for un-targeted, poor advertising for those looking to build their pages. The majority of those users who click will have to be sold on Google+ first before they can follow a brand page. Instead of hitting active users, advertisers are simply handing money to Google to blast the budget across the general Google network.

None of the other social networks operate in this fashion. Facebook offers a variety of advertising options across the social network, Twitter has a handful of ad options across Twitter. The key is that all of these are on the network that has that social scent trail to it.

So Is This New Service Helpful For Anyone?

Is this worth doing? In some cases, absolutely. If a company doesn?t have resources for a website and they don?t want to promote their Facebook page, this gives them an option to get up and running. If you are on a shoestring budget and need a landing page, this option may?quench?your?thirst?for more eyeballs. The issue isn?t with the ?attract new customers? statement that Oestlien made, but more about the attraction of new followers aspect as there is no Google+ user targeting built into the service.

While this new targeting may look valuable at-a-glance, severe lack of targeting makes it tough to recommend to anyone. From Google?s standpoint however, this would be an ideal selection for advertisers as a big byproduct of the budget is more awareness of the Google+ product.

Pope's Christmas message pushes for peace in Syria, Nigeria ...

Pope Benedict XVI delivers his Christmas Day message from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica on Christmas day in Vatican City.

By Reuters

VATICAN CITY -- Pope Benedict used his Christmas message to the world on Tuesday to say people should never lose hope for peace, even in conflict-riven Syria and in Nigeria where he spoke of "terrorism" against Christians.

Marking the eighth Christmas season of his pontificate, the 85-year-old read his "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) message to tens of thousands of people in St Peter's Square and to millions of others watching around the world.

In churches and bus stations, on water skis and bicycles, people from the Middle East to middle America celebrate Christmas.

Delivering Christmas greetings in 65 languages, Benedict underscored his view that the hope represented by Christmas should never die, even in the most dire of situations.

Pilgrims, locals mark Christmas in Bethlehem

In his virtual tour of the some of the world's trouble spots, he reserved his toughest words for Syria, Nigeria and Mali.

"Yes, may peace spring up for the people of Syria, deeply wounded and divided by a conflict which does not spare even the defenseless and reaps innocent victims," he said.

"Once again I appeal for an end to the bloodshed, easier access for the relief of refugees and the displaced, and dialogue in the pursuit of a political solution to the conflict."

The leader of the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics also condemned conflicts in Mali and Nigeria, two countries where Islamist groups have waged violent campaigns.

Reverends Gabriel and Jeanette Salguero of the Multicultural Lambs Church in New York City, talk about how to find the true spirit of Christmas and how to incorporate that into your daily life year round.

Bombings, amputations
"May the birth of Christ favor the return of peace in Mali and that of concord in Nigeria, where savage acts of terrorism continue to reap victims, particularly among Christians," he said.

In Nigeria, the Islamist sect Boko Haram has killed hundreds in its campaign to impose sharia law in the north of the country, targeting a number of churches.

In Mali, a mix of Islamists with links to al Qaeda have occupied the country's north since April, destroying much of the region's religious heritage. They have also carried out amputations to help impose strict Islamic law on a population that has practiced a more moderate form of Islam for centuries.

At midnight mass in the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem, the cradle of Christianity, the message was of peace, love and goodwill to all mankind. NBC's Martin Fletcher reports.

Benedict also held out a Christmas olive branch to the new government in China, asking is members to "esteem the contributions of religions". China does not allow its Catholics to recognize the pope's authority, forcing them to be members of a parallel state-backed Church.

Late on Monday night, Benedict presided over a Christmas Eve Mass in St Peter's Basilica, where he urged people to find room for God in their fast-paced lives filled with the latest technological gadgets.

"Do we have time and space for him? Do we not actually turn away God himself? We begin to do so when we have no time for him," he said.

Archbishop: Christianity still relevant
Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, who leads the global 80-million-strong Anglican Communion, said in his Christmas day sermon that the answer to the question of whether Christianity had "had its day" was a "resounding no".

"Silent Night" is a favorite carol that has been translated into hundreds of dialects, but it had a most humble birth not far from Salzburg, Austria. NBC's Michelle Kosinski takes a visit to Salzburg to explore the history of the carol from its very beginnings, through its most remarkable performance on Christmas Eve, 1914.

Last month, the Church of England narrowly voted against allowing women bishops - to the dismay of Williams and Prime Minister David Cameron - in a move its leaders said risked undermining its role as the established church in society with clerics in parliament's upper chamber.

The media, many politicians and some members of the public have criticized the Church of England for failing to allow women bishops and for failing to back government plans for gay marriage at a time when it is under pressure to modernize.

How to Be Responsible When Using Payday Loans

Payday loans are growing in popularity for many different reasons. Payday loans are easy to apply for, they feature a short repayment period, they have fairly low interest, and they offer an approval process that is not based on credit. However, because payday loan companies do not check your credit score and this means they hand out loans to just about anyone. It?s important to be responsible when using payday loans. If you?re not, you could easily end up in debt and fall victim to the payday loan trap, a devastating cycle that requires more loans to pay off your initial loans.

Payday Loans1 ? Prepare a repayment strategy before you ever apply for the payday loan

It?s important to understand that online payday loans are considered short-term financial aid. You will have to start paying back the loan rather quickly, so if you aren?t prepared for this, it?s going to take you by surprised. Payday loans earn their name because they are typically paid back when ?payday? arrives. Within just two to four weeks of receiving the loan, you are expected to pay it off in full. If you can?t afford this, then the only option you have is to take out a second loan to repay the first, which will create more debt for you and the struggle will only reoccur.

2 ? Know the interest rate that you will be expected to pay

Interest rates for payday loans can be costly. The longer it takes you to pay off the loan, the more interest your loan will accrue. Be sure to review the interest rate on your loan and understand how much extra money you will be expected to pay. Interest is paid on top of the amount of money you have to repay on your loan.

3 ? Plan the day you take out the loan based off of when you get paid from your job

It?s important to get paid from your job around two to four weeks after you have taken out the loan. This will give you enough cash to pay off the loan within a reasonable amount of time. Of course, you need to talk with the payday loan company so that you can review the repayment terms. You should familiarize yourself with the repayment requirements prior to taking out the loan so that there are no surprises.

4 ? Spend the money from your payday loan wisely

The money that you get from your loan can be spent on whatever you choose to use it for, but it?s advisable that you use it for a wise purchase. Most customers use their payday loans for debt repayment, credit card payments, or paying off bills. This will improve your financial standing considerably, so using the payday loan for something like this makes a lot of sense. Even if the loan puts a little more debt on your plate and you have to sacrifice to pay it off, you should be on much better ground financially, once the loan has been repaid in full.

Do You Know How To Effectively Communicate to Your Copywriter ...

In addition to trust, the most critical factor in creating a successful client / copywriter relationship is the same as in creating any other relationship . . .

Good communication.

You and your copywriter need to clarify your expectations of each other, preferably in writing. Each of you needs to understand the other?s expectations. Your writer also needs to know the audience and purpose of what he or she will be writing. You can?t just say, ?I need a squeeze page and four blog posts by next Tuesday.?

You need to clearly express . . .

Who the target audience is. The more information, the better.
What the articles and blogs need to say?topics covered, length, and formal or informal style.
Where the blogs and articles will appear. The writer can visit those sites to get a feel for the style and tone of the writing.
When you need the writing completed. Allow for editing time.
Why the articles and blogs are being written and what the calls to action need to be.
How the writing will be used, such as adding articles to a directory, compiling an ebook, or guest blogging.

Your copywriter needs to ensure you?re aware of his or her guidelines and best practices for . . .

Writing the copy. How does he or she plan to write those articles and blogs and create effective calls to action?
Managing deadlines. If you?re both communicating, there should be no issues here. When you have a big project, setting internal deadlines is crucial so no one is scrambling at the last minute.
Editing. Some copywriters have their own editors, and some do not.
Gathering background information. How much research will you provide, and how much will your copywriter need to do?
Revising copy. If the copy doesn?t speak to the audience or isn?t well done, you need to know how the copywriter will make it right. However, there should also be a guideline for what happens if?you accidentally misinform the writer or provide inaccurate research.
Requesting payment. Are you paying your copywriter by the project, by the hour, or some other arrangement? When does the writer invoice, and how long do you have to pay after invoicing?

Many of these points can and should be put in the master contract you have with your copywriter, as they?ll be constant, but others will vary by project. Always put as much in writing as you can, even if it?s just an email. Written communication helps projects run more smoothly.

As you work with your copywriter, you?ll get to know each other and how you work best. For example, my copy is significantly better if I have at least two days?as opposed to a rush job?because I write the first draft, let it sit overnight, and then go back and polish. So rush projects are kept to a minimum.

A good client / copywriter relationship can be a gold mine for you. Nurture it. You?ll be surprised how a good writer can make your life easier and your business more lucrative.
