The University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC) last week launched a Writing Centre, the first of its kind in this part of Guyana this week.
Dr Jerry Jailal, lecturer at the university noted that it was another innovative idea of UGBC in responding to the needs of students and wider community. Writing, he posited, and use of language is at the heart of academic excellence and good communication, yet, he noted, writing is a problem all over the world even in developed countries.
?Students have problems with written and oral language. Harvard and Brown Universities in the U.S.A?They have writing centres,?.he stressed.
The idea for a writing centre at UGBC is credited to Professor Daizal R. Samad, Director of the campus.
?I have known Professor Samad to be an innovator and a transformational leader, someone who not only wishes, but who works hard at being a doer and implementer,? Dr. Jailal said
Professor Samad, at the launching ceremony, in speaking to a group of English lecturers including Ms Camanie Khedaroo and Ms Pamela Rose, among others, as well as the Research Methods class, stated that the writing centre is meant to strengthen English language usage across the board and on the campus, irrespective of disciplines.
The centre is equipped with six ?cutting-edge? computers, one serving as a central monitoring device; all are fully connected to the internet with high- speed connectivity. There is also wireless access for additional lap-tops; an overhead projector that could convey internet downloads or centralised computer teaching tools to all the other computers including the campus?s computer centre. There is also a live central screen access, so that meetings with the main campus at Turkeyen can be done right in Berbice without having lecturers travel to Georgetown, cutting on costs.
Samad noted that they plan to use the strong students as tutors ?to facilitate strengthening other students who are not as strong or who are just downright weak, so we will have student volunteers managing this under a faculty member?. An outreach, too, is planned to the CXC Candidates, ?and we know that English Language usage is a problem and the thing is, that people have been complaining and I have not seen much concrete being done to solve that problem? this is concrete!?
Samad stated that UGBC has spent some $8M for lecturers to travel from Berbice to Turkeyen for meetings from January to June this year. ?Now that?s a lot of money, man, $8M! But we could use this centre for small meetings and use things like Skype. It means no traveling; it means we save time and money?.
GT&T, he noted, has identified the campus as a potential ?hot- spot? location for its network.
Within two years, Samad noted that the campus envisages? the establishment of a Centre for Academic Studies (CADS) which will be charged with responsibilities such as student- advising; short certification courses; outreach activities; teaching and learning excellence; orientation; the writing centre; retreat- type activities on campus; career orientation; peer tutoring and mentoring and student counseling.

No. 14 Ohio St holds off No. 20 Michigan St 17-16

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) ? Urban Meyer's first Big Ten game as Ohio State coach turned out to be a classic welcome to the conference.

His quarterback got shaken up twice, but Braxton Miller kept coming back on the field, and in the end the Buckeyes played just well enough defensively to come away with a bruising victory.

"This was a war. This was two sledgehammers going at each other," Meyer said. "I know the Big Ten has taken some heat. That was a great game. Great atmosphere, a bunch of great players on the field that are going to be playing at the next level, and that was good for college football and good for the Big Ten."

Miller threw for 179 yards and ran for 136, and No. 14 Ohio State held off No. 20 Michigan State 17-16 on Saturday. Miller put Ohio State ahead 17-13 with a 63-yard touchdown pass to Devin Smith in the third quarter, and the Buckeyes' maligned defense held Le'Veon Bell and the Michigan State running game in check.

Meyer becomes the third coach to start 5-0 in his first season at Ohio State. Carol Widdoes and Earle Bruce also did it in 1944 and 1979.

Michigan State (3-2, 0-1) has lost four home games in a row against Ohio State.

The Buckeyes (5-0, 1-0) aren't eligible to win the Big Ten title because of sanctions, but they handed the Spartans an early loss.

Michigan State took a 13-10 advantage in the third on a terrific individual effort by Keith Mumphery. With the ball on the Ohio State 29 after a personal foul call on the Buckeyes, Mumphery took Andrew Maxwell's short pass and eluded four tacklers before dragging a couple more Buckeyes into the end zone.

The lead didn't last long. Miller managed to pick up a first down, just barely, with a run on third-and-1, then lofted a deep pass on the next play to Smith, who beat Johnny Adams along the right sideline to put Ohio State ahead to stay.

"We hook up all the time," Miller said. "That's one of my favorite receivers, so I'm always going to look for him."

Miller turned the ball over three times in Michigan State territory, including a fumble early in the fourth ? but the Buckeyes actually caught a break on that play. The ball bounced right to Kurtis Drummond of the Spartans, who began running down the right sideline before the play was blown dead and Miller was ruled down.

The call was reversed after a review, giving Michigan State the ball at its own 32 ? but the Buckeyes were saved from a big return that would almost surely have followed if the call had been correct to begin with.

The Buckeyes then appeared to have stopped the Spartans when Maxwell underthrew a pass on fourth-and-1 from the Ohio State 44, but Travis Howard was called for defensive holding on the opposite side of the field, keeping the drive alive.

Dan Conroy's 48-yard field goal pulled Michigan State within a point with 7:07 remaining.

Miller remained down holding his left knee after his fumble but was able to come back the next time Ohio State had the ball. The Spartans forced a three-and-out anyway and took over at their own 20 with 5:39 left, down 17-16.

They could manage only one first down before having to punt, and they never got the ball back.

Miller was 16 of 23 with an interception. Maxwell went 22 of 42 for 269 yards.

"Braxton Miller is a very exciting player," Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said. "We knew that coming into the game. He took a lot of bad plays and made them good ones. ... I thought Maxwell played well enough to win. He threw the ball very effectively."

Bell came in with 610 yards on 117 carries, but he ran for only 45 yards against Ohio State. The Buckeyes' defense was ranked last in the Big Ten before the game.

"A great team win," Meyer said. "We found out something about our team today, to go on the road in a hostile environment against a quality, quality football team and find a way to win."

Ohio State drove 75 yards in eight plays to open the game, taking a 7-0 lead on Jordan Hall's 1-yard scoring run. Miller had runs of 20 and 13 yards on the drive, but he was hit along the sideline at the end of the latter one and was shaken up.

He had to leave the game but was back for his team's next possession.

The Spartans answered immediately with a 34-yard field goal by Conroy, and that was all the scoring for the half. Miller threw an interception and lost a fumble in second quarter, but Conroy missed a 42-yard attempt in the final minute.

In the snap, that appears to have been taken years ago, a woman who bears a resemblance to Brooke Shields is sitting next to lead singer H.R. of seminal hardcore band Bad Brains and is smoking from a pipe.

Bad Brains' manager even went on to tell Gawker, "It's her. This would be from 1983. Hair length, and H.R. missing that tooth he knocked out hitting a huge stage divider pole at the Reggae Lounge. Brooke would have been around 18, maybe still a Ford model."

But, a rep for the former "Lipstick Jungle" star, denied that Shields is the woman in question puffing away, telling E! News, "That is definitely NOT her."

According to the Daily Mail, Shields told Nylon back in 2000 her mom turned her off to the idea of using drugs, saying, "I don't know if it's reverse psychology, but my mom would say, 'You wanna do drugs? Fine. Do them. Just do me a favor. Let me do 'em with you. I'll get you the best stuff. This way I know you're not going to die.' And the whole thing was so unappealing to me."

NFL refs back; Ravens lead Browns 23-10 after 3

BALTIMORE (AP) ? The regular NFL officials returned to cheers Thursday night, and Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco delighted the crowd by throwing for one touchdown and running for another to help Baltimore take a 23-10 lead over the winless Cleveland Browns after three quarters.

A 63-yard interception return for a touchdown by Cary Williams with 15 seconds left in the third quarter turned a slim 16-10 lead into a 13-point cushion. The pass by rookie Brandon Weeden was intended for Travis Benjamin, but Williams jumped the out pattern and raced down the right sideline with his first career interception.

A lockout of the league's regular officials ended late Wednesday, bringing about the exit of the controversial replacement refs. And so, finally, the real officials were in place for Week 4, beginning with this matchup of AFC North rivals.

As they walked onto the field hours before the game, the officiating crew received a round of applause and shouts of encouragement from fans in the lower sections. Head linesman Wayne Mackie and line judge Jeff Seeman both tipped their caps to acknowledge the support.

And then, before the pregame coin flip, referee Gene Steratore greeted the players at midfield by saying, "Good evening, men, it's good to be back."

Many in the sellout crowd stood and roared their approval.

After a scoreless first quarter, Baltimore went up 6-0 on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Flacco to Torrey Smith. The conversion failed.

On the Ravens' next drive, rookie Justin Tucker kicked a 45-yard field goal.

Cleveland got back into the game with an 11-play, 94-yard march directed by Weeden, who connected with Greg Little for 43 yards before rookie Trent Richardson ran in from the 1.

A light rain turned heavier at halftime, but it did not immediately deter the Baltimore offense.

On the opening drive of the third quarter, Flacco took the Ravens 89 yards in 13 plays for a 16-7 lead. Flacco completed five passes during the march, including three to Anquan Boldin for 60 yards, before the quarterback ran in from the 1 on a third-and-goal.

Later in the quarter, Tucker missed the first field goal try of his career, a 47-yarder that sailed wide right.

The Browns were forced to play most of the game without wide receiver and punt returner Joshua Cribbs, who left with a head injury after absorbing a hard hit late in the first quarter. Cribbs was running back a punt when he lost his helmet while taking a shot from the shoulder of Dannell Ellerbe. Cribbs lay prone for several minutes before being helped from the field.

Cribbs lost the ball on the play, and Jameel McClain recovered the fumble. But Baltimore gave it back when Flacco's pass into the end zone was intercepted by linebacker Craig Robertson.

Flacco had thrown 125 passes without being picked off before Robertson stepped in front of Anquan Boldin.

During pregame practice, Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis spoke with Steratore and gave him a hug. Steratore turned around and shook hands with Ravens safety Ed Reed, who spoke out against the replacement refs.

Many of the fans filing into the stadium spoke delightedly about the demise of the replacements.

"It was very chaotic," 44-year-old Karen Riley said. "They couldn't control the players on either side. There were bad calls, constantly, and in some cases refs making different calls at the same time."

Eric Warthen, who attended the game with his son, said, "I grew up in a union family so I understand. We really didn't get the best product.

"I don't think they tarnished the NFL image. I think they tarnished (Commissioner) Roger Goodell's image," Warthen said. "When he came on a few years ago he had a no-nonsense attitude, a safety-first attitude. With the replacement refs there have been a lot of bad hits."

Hours before kickoff, as Steratore prepared for his first game in nearly a year, he said, "Very elated to be back. It feels like being back home."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republicans on Thursday fired a vendor suspected of submitting 108 questionable new voter registrations in Florida's Palm Beach County, ground zero for disputed ballots in 2000's presidential race.

The Republican Party of Florida used Virginia-based Strategic Allied Consulting to help register and turnout voters in Florida, one of a shrinking handful of states President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney are contesting. The Florida state party had paid the firm more than $1.3 million so far, and the Republican National Committee used the group for almost $3 million of work in Nevada, North Carolina, Colorado and Virginia.

"We have zero tolerance for any threat to the integrity of elections. When we were informed of an alleged incident we immediately cut all ties to the company," RNC Communications Director Sean Spicer said.

The state party similarly sought to distance itself from the firm and its main operative, Nathan Sproul.

"We immediately informed the Republican National Committee that we were terminating the contract with the voter-registration vendor we hired at their request because there is no place for voter-registration fraud in Florida," state Republican Party Executive Director Mike Grissom said in a statement.

Strategic Allied Consulting said the suspected forms came from one person and the company was cooperating with elections officials in Florida.

"Strategic has a zero-tolerance policy for breaking the law," said Fred Petti, a company attorney. "Accordingly, once we learned of the irregularities in Palm Beach County, we were able to trace all questionable cards to one individual and immediately terminated our working relationship with the individual in question."

The company did not identify the individual.

Polls show Obama increasing his lead over Romney in Florida, a hard-fought state that hosted the GOP's convention last month. If Romney were to lose Florida and its 29 electoral votes, he would have to sweep other battleground states of Ohio, Virginia, Wisconsin, Colorado, Iowa, Nevada and New Hampshire to win the White House.

Palm Beach County Elections Supervisor Susan Bucher's staff noticed signatures that looked alike and incomplete forms submitted on Sept. 5 by Strategic Allied Consulting. Bucher met with prosecutors on Monday to request an investigation.

Palm Beach County was at the center of the ballot recount in 2000, with George W. Bush and Al Gore both contesting the results that seemed to give Reform Party nominee Pat Buchanan an unusually strong showing. Critics ? and legions of attorneys ? said the ballot design led many Gore supporters to cast votes for Buchanan.

The subsequent questions that arose about how ballots should be tabulated made their way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which settled the bitter contest in a 5-4 ruling barring a ballot recount. Bush won.

Sproul, a longtime GOP operative who leads Strategic Allied Consulting, previously worked for Romney's campaign through a separate firm, Lincoln Strategy Group. Romney spokeswoman Sarah Pompei says the campaign has not used Sproul since 2011, when the campaign was using Lincoln to collect signatures to get on primary ballots.

The deadline to register in Florida for Nov. 6's election is Oct. 9.

The BBC apologized Tuesday Sept. 26, 2012 for revealing details of a conversation with Queen Elizabeth II in which the monarch allegedly voiced concerns about the U.K.'s inability to arrest a radical cleric, Abu Hamza al-Masri . On Tuesday, BBC journalist Frank Gardner recounted that in a private conversation years ago, the queen said she had mentioned she was upset that al-Masri had not been arrested.

BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner broadcast details of a private conversation with the queen during which she supposedly told him she had complained to the last government about radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri.

The queen was said to be upset that Britain had not arrested him after he preached fiery anti-Western sermons outside a mosque in London after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in the United States.

That was awkward for a head of state who has no political or executive role and is expected to stay neutral in public. The queen has never given a media interview and typically avoids controversial topics in her speeches.

The Egyptian-born cleric lost an appeal in the European courts on Monday and faces extradition from Britain to the United States. Washington accuses him of supporting al Qaeda, aiding a kidnapping in Yemen and plotting to open a U.S. training camp for militants.

Delays in arresting the cleric angered many in Britain. Newspapers campaigned for his extradition, with the Sun using the headline "Sling Your Hook", a reference to the metal hook he wore in place of a hand he lost in disputed circumstances.

The public broadcaster, mainly funded by a fee paid by everyone under 75 who owns a television, said the meeting had taken place some years ago.

"The conversation should have remained private and the BBC and Frank deeply regret this breach of confidence. It was wholly inappropriate," the BBC said. Buckingham Palace had no comment.

A former banker, Gardner has worked for the BBC since 1997. He was partly paralysed in 2004 after being shot on assignment in Saudi Arabia.
Elizabeth holds a weekly private audience with the prime minister to discuss topical issues. There have been 12 prime ministers since her coronation in 1953, from Winston Churchill to David Cameron.

Republic, a group that campaigns for the monarchy's abolition, accused the royal family of a "cynical PR ploy" designed to win popular support.
"The decision to disclose this one conversation while keeping all else secret smacks of a deliberate PR stunt to put the queen on the right side of public opinion," the group's head Graham Smith said.

After well-received celebrations to mark the queen's 60 years on the throne this summer, the royal family has suffered two embarrassing episodes in recent weeks.

Naked pictures of Elizabeth's grandson Prince Harry at a Las Vegas hotel were published around the world, swiftly followed by topless photos of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge -- the former Kate Middleton who is the wife of Harry's brother William, second in line to the throne. Sexually active teen girls? best bet for birth control is either an IUD or a birth-control implant, say new guidelines from a leading doctors? group. More than 40% of teens are sexually active. Nearly all of them use some kind of birth control. But fewer than 1 in 20 uses the most effective contraceptives . The result: 82% of teen pregnancies are unplanned. ?Intrauterine devices and the [birth-control] implant are the best reversible methods for preventing unintended pregnancy , rapid repeat pregnancy, and abortion in young women,? state the new guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Condoms and birth-control pills work very well if used exactly right. The way most people use them, however, they often fail. Condoms put on wrong or lubricated too little can break. And missing even one dose of a birth-control pill, or even taking one at the wrong time of day, raises the chance of failure. These common forms of birth control are even more likely to fail in the hands of teens. On the other hand, IUDs and birth-control implants work extremely well ? and work just as well in teens as in adult women. IUD vs. Birth-Control Implant An IUD is a device shaped like the letter ?T.? Once inserted into the uterus ? a procedure that can be uncomfortable ? it prevents pregnancy for up to 12 years. It can be removed whenever a woman wants. Getting an IUD can cost between $500 and $1,000. It must be placed by a health care professional. Birth-control implants are rods the size of a matchstick inserted into the arm. They last up to three years, and can be removed whenever a woman wants. Getting a birth-control implant costs $400 to $800. It must be placed by a health care professional. Health Care Pros Advised to Help Teens Get IUDs, Implants The guidelines state that it?s up to the teen to decide whether she wants to get an IUD or a birth-control implant or not. ?Health care providers should consider long-acting reversible contraception methods for adolescents and help make these methods accessible to them,? the guidelines say. The guidelines also state that health professionals should protect teens? confidentiality, which ?is of particular importance to adolescents.? As of September 2012, in 21 states and the District of Columbia, nobody other than the teen needs to be involved in the decision. In 25 states, laws restrict the ability of teens to decide all by themselves: Twenty-one states allow teens to consent to birth control services if they are married. Three states allow minors to consent to birth control services if a doctor determines they would face a health hazard without them. Six states allow minors to consent to birth control services if they already are parents. Six states allow minors to consent to birth control services if they are or have ever been pregnant. Eleven states allow minors to consent to birth control services if they meet requirements such as having a high school diploma, demonstrating maturity, or receiving a referral from a doctor or member of the clergy. The ACOG guidelines note that cost will be a barrier to teens who, to protect their confidentiality, do not want to seek benefits under their parents? health insurance. PassWallet Brings Apple's Passbook to Android [Video]

Android: Apple's Passbook app for managing loyalty cards, coupons, tickets and more looks cool, but it's only available, as you'd expect, on Apple devices running iOS 6. PassWallet for Android, however, does everything Passbook does and ports Passbook digital items into your Android device.

Passbook for iOS 6 stores its mobile wallet items as .pkpass files. PassWallett for Android detects these files and imports them automatically from your email messages and websites you visit. This means you can organize digital coupons, travel and event tickets, loyalty cards and the like from services such as Fandango, Ticketmaster, and Walgreens.

The app has been out for a while, but we're not placing any bets on Apple letting it last very much longer once it becomes aware of the app. Still, you can grab PassWallet now from the link below and get Passbook functionality on your Android.

Bose SoundLink Air

Given the success of the Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker?, a portable Bluetooth speaker system released last year, the Bose SoundLink Air?, a wireless audio system based on Apple's AirPlay, is a minor disappointment. Its simple design has the familiar, spare Bose look, setting it up is a breeze, and it also has the familiar Bose sound?slightly bass heavy, with some tweaked hi-mids and treble to make everything crisp. But the $349.95 (direct) system distorts on deep bass tracks at top volumes?something that simply shouldn't happen at this price. If you don't listen to music with deep bass content, you're probably safe, but modern mixes for popular music often contain sub-bass sounds that will wreak havoc at top volumes on the SoundLink Air.

Design
The Bose SoundLink Air is a sleek, black slab of glossy plastic and speaker grille, measuring 6.8 by 12.1 by 4 inches. There's a handle grip built in to the rear side of its 4.7-pound frame, just below the top panel, and if you spend $89.95 for a rechargeable battery, it becomes portable. As is, the system needs to be plugged in to a wall socket. There are very few buttons or controls on the system?just two Volume buttons on the right hand panel; all of the real playback controls are on the included remote control, or on the iOS device from which you're streaming.

An indicator on the front panel displays the status of your Wi-Fi connection, whether you've muted the speakers, and whether you're playing audio from the Aux input instead of over Wi-Fi. The back panel houses a 3.5mm Aux input, the power adapter connection, and a USB port. There is no physical dock connection for charging iOS devices or playing audio directly from the connection.

The USB port is essential for the initial set-up of the system (a cable is included). You go to a specified link on Bose's website and download an app to your computer that quickly walks you through the AirPlay set-up process, including getting your iOS device, be it iPhone, iPod, or iPad, streaming to the speakers.

The included remote control is also black, with rubberized buttons that control Power, Mute, Volume, Play/Pause, Track Forward/Backward, and switching between Aux input and AirPlay streaming devices. Bose put a bit more effort into the design and feel of the buttons than you typically find on cheap remotes included with speakers systems, which is a plus, but more often than not, you'll probably control the audio from your iPhone or iPad.

One major complaint: the power adapter is massive. It's a roughly 3 by 3 by 2-inch black box that includes a recessed area for wrapping the attached connection cable, but it can easily eat up an entire power outlet, and it sticks far enough out from the wall to be visually and ergonomically annoying. I'm not sure I have ever seen an adapter this large for a consumer speaker system.

Performance
Sonically, the Bose SoundLink Air offers a pleasant frequency response, with an emphasis on the lower frequencies. Low-mid frequencies seem to be particularly boosted, which means electric and upright bass parts really pop out of the mix, as they did when playing "Yet Again," off the new Grizzly Bear record, Shields. For content like Fiona Apple's latest record, The Idler Wheel?, this can sound great, because the album is not full of overwhelming sub-bass sounds, so the overall effect is to beef the mix up a bit, letting instruments like the upright bass or deeper percussion grab a bit more of the spotlight.

Purists won't love the bass boost, however, and no one will love what happens to songs with seriously deep bass, like the Knife's "Silent Shout." At top volumes, regardless of whether you're streaming via AirPlay or playing through the Aux input, this track distorts wildly. To be fair, the SoundLink Air can get quite loud, and at less intense volumes, it sounds powerful and clean, even on deep bass tracks. But distortion simply shouldn't be an issue in this price range, and it's a bit of a surprise coming from Bose.

Instrumental tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," get some added low-end oomph for the lower register strings and deeper percussion hits. Again, purists may not love it, but it does add a certain dimension to the music that fans of stronger bass response will enjoy. Bose also does a good job of making sure the high frequencies never take too much of a backseat?whether it's Fiona Apple's vocals or John Adams' violinists, things are always pretty crisp.

Bose doesn't make systems for audiophiles, no matter what the marketing may imply. The SoundLink Air, like the Beats by Dr. Dre Beatbox Portable?, offers a highly sculpted frequency response designed to highlight the bass-heavy mixes we often hear in modern day pop, rock, rap, and even in film scores. The Beats system offers an even more pronounced bass response, but near this price range, there are some more purist-friendly wireless audio options. We love the JBL OnBeat Xtreme?, which uses Bluetooth instead of AirPlay, and offers a balanced, powerful output without distortion at top levels.

In the AirPlay realm, the best systems are usually a little pricier than the SoundLink Air?the Klipsch Gallery G-17 Air? and Altec Lansing's inAir 5000 Wireless AirPlay Speaker? are two fine examples of how good AirPlay can sound, but the higher price has a lot to do with why. The SoundLink Air is by no means a bad speaker system?if you don't listen to music with seriously deep, sub-bass content in the mix, you're unlikely to experience much in the way of distortion, even at top volumes. But if you're looking for a good wireless speaker system and you like hip hop, electronic, or modern rock, and you like to play your music loud, you're probably better off looking into other AirPlay or Bluetooth systems.

Young cancer survivors often forgo medical care due to costs

Many survivors of adolescent and young adult cancers avoid routine medical care because it's too expensive, despite the fact that most have health insurance. That is the conclusion of a new study published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society. The results indicate that expanding insurance coverage for young cancer survivors may be insufficient to safeguard their long-term health without efforts to reduce their medical cost burdens.

Medical care in the years after a cancer diagnosis is particularly important for detecting any long-term health conditions associated with their cancer treatment; however, little is known about the extent of care that survivors of adolescent and young adult cancers receive in the years after their diagnosis and treatment.

To investigate, Anne Kirchhoff, PhD, MPH, of Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, and her colleagues analyzed national survey responses from younger adults ages 20-39 years: 979 who were diagnosed with cancer between the ages of 15 to 34 years and were at least five years from diagnosis, compared with 67,216 controls who had no cancer history.

While adolescent and young adult cancer survivors had similar rates of being uninsured as those without cancer (21 percent versus 23 percent), survivors were 67 percent more likely to forgo routine medical care due to costs in the previous year. Cost barriers were particularly high for younger survivors aged 20 to 29 years (44 percent versus 16 percent of controls) and female survivors (35 percent versus 18 percent of controls). Survivors reporting poorer health also experienced more cost barriers.

"The Affordable Care Act is an important step to ensuring that adolescent and young adult cancer survivors have health insurance coverage and improving their health care access; however, they need to be educated about the importance of regular health care to monitor for late effects," said Dr. Kirchhoff. "Furthermore, even the insured survivors in our study reported unmet health care needs due to cost barriers, suggesting that adolescent and young adult cancer survivors need resource supports beyond health insurance."
