College football notes: Eureka QB is Player of the Week

Eureka College senior quarterback Sam Durley has been named the Manning Award Player of the Week, presented by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, according to an announcement Thursday morning.

Durley, the first non-Division I player to be recognized, earned the honor over eight other Manning Award Stars of the Week in the Allstate Sugar Bowl?s Facebook contest.

Durley finished Saturday?s 62-55 victory at Knox 34-for-52 with five touchdown passes and an NCAA record 736 passing yards.

In addition to the single-game NCAA record, Durley broke Eureka?s all-time passing yardage, attempts and passing touchdown records on Saturday. The senior now has 6,095 career passing yards, 792 attempts and 48 touchdowns.

OREGON DRUG TESTING: The University of Oregon is implementing random drug testing of all its athletes, following a media report earlier this year that estimated from 40 to 60 percent of the football team smoked marijuana. ?

Oregon?s previous drug policy allowed for testing when there was reasonable suspicion. A recent decision by the general counsel gives temporary permission for random testing effective this month. The policy still faces a public hearing in early October.
